Snow Removal

It is the goal and intent of the City of Dillingham to provide timely, efficient and cost effective winter maintenance, snow removal and ice control on its roadways. Due to many variables that are inherent in Dillingham weather, each storm and/or weather event may require slightly different efforts and/or emphasis on any number of maintenance tasks, which together, determine the overall winter maintenance, snow removal or ice control strategy.

While it is not possible to maintain a snow and ice-free road or sidewalk during a storm, it is the intention of the City to provide practical, safe access along city streets and municipal facilities during winter storms. The Public Works Department will strive to achieve removal of snow on all priority roads including school zones, within 24 hours following a snowstorm of 2" or greater.

The Department will plow all lower priority streets as time permits, and will strive to clear all snow and ice along these streets within 72 hours following a snow storm of 2" or greater.

Crews will report to work at 6:00 am during the week if snow accumulation over the night is greater than two inches. During nights and weekends the City of Dillingham Police Department shall notify the Public Works Director or his/her on call designee that road conditions warrant mobilization of snow removal or ice control activity.

How Snow Plowing Works
The City has 3 snow plow trucks. There needs to be an accumulation of at least 2” or greater before plowing will begin. The main roads are plowed first, and then the plows will move to the inner subdivision streets. The City will strive to have the roads cleared within 24 hours of the end of any storm.

The snow plows are designed to push the snow from the center line of the road to the edge of the road. This sometimes creates a problem with blocking driveways. The city does its utmost best to avoid blocking driveways, but with heavy snowfalls at times, it can't be avoided.

There are certain areas in the City which are private roadways and are not plowed by the City. Developers are responsible for plowing subdivisions which have not been taken over by the City. There are several of these developments located in Dillingham.
